GSBG Treaty Test Lab Exploring UK EU Gibraltar Impacts on Sustainable Building
In May 2026, the GSBG hosted the first event in its new Test Lab Series, bringing together professionals from across Gibraltar's built environment sector for an open and collaborative workshop on sustainability. The event was kindly hosted by NatWest Bank and attracted participants from a wide range of disciplines, reflecting the growing interest in sustainable development across Gibraltar.
The Test Lab Series has been developed as a forum for industry professionals to come together, share expertise, challenge ideas and explore opportunities facing Gibraltar's built environment. Rather than a traditional conference or presentation-based event, the format is designed to encourage discussion and collective problem-solving around some of the most significant sustainability challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
The inaugural Test Lab was initially established to explore the potential implications of the proposed Gibraltar-UK-EU Treaty on sustainability and development; however, true to the participant-led nature of the format, discussions quickly expanded into a broader conversation about Gibraltar's environmental ambitions, implementation challenges and priorities for the future.
Workshop discussions were structured around three themes: urban greening, supply chains, and the energy performance of buildings. These themes provided a starting point for wider conversations on biodiversity, embodied carbon, sustainable procurement, retrofit, climate resilience and the need for better data and clearer frameworks to support decision-making.
Perhaps the most valuable outcome of the day was the opportunity to bring together professionals from different sectors and organisations to exchange perspectives and identify common challenges. The discussions demonstrated a strong appetite for greater collaboration, knowledge sharing and industry engagement to help accelerate sustainable development across Gibraltar.
With the success of the first event, the Test Lab Series has established a strong foundation for future workshops, providing a platform for constructive dialogue between industry, government and other stakeholders. As Gibraltar continues its sustainability journey, initiatives such as the GSBG Test Labs can play an important role in turning conversation into collective action.
