In June 2023, Gibraltar advanced its dialogue on sustainable buildings with the inaugural ASPIRE Conference 2023 on Sustainable Built Environment. Organised by the Department of the Environment and GSBG, the conference gathered local and international experts, government representatives, and industry professionals to discuss reducing the environmental impact of Gibraltar's built environment whilst addressing the needs of a growing, space-limited community.

The event included keynote speakers, workshops, and panel discussions on energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and construction's future. GSBG participated to support the local conversation on sustainable building practices shaping Gibraltar's future spaces.

A Timely Conference for Gibraltar’s Built Environment

Sustainable construction in Gibraltar faces unique challenges due to limited land, closely situated buildings, coastal conditions, and the need for efficient upgrades to older structures. ASPIRE provided a platform for policy, design, research, and construction practice to converge, emphasising the need for collaboration among government, industry, researchers, designers, and community organisations.

Exploring Key Themes

The conference addressed questions on reducing energy use, decarbonisation, sustainable planning, and collaboration. Discussions highlighted the importance of energy-efficient buildings, durable materials, and adaptable designs, which are crucial for Gibraltar's sustainability.

GSBG’s Role and Future Directions

GSBG collaborated in organising the event, fostering a network focused on sustainable construction. The conference emphasised energy efficiency, whole-life decarbonisation, and the importance of local action. It highlighted practical measures like better insulation, shading, and efficient systems, tailored to Gibraltar's specific needs.

ASPIRE 2023 underscored the need for shared responsibility among public bodies, professionals, contractors, building owners, researchers, and community groups. The event was a positive step towards a sustainable future for Gibraltar's built environment, with GSBG committed to continuing the conversation and applying sustainable practices in future projects.
